MEET JONO

Hey there, I’m Jono! As a Lake District wedding photographer and videographer, I’m lucky enough to spend my days in some of Cumbria’s most iconic landscapes, but Low Hall, The Lakes holds a special place in my heart. My history here runs deep! Not only did I have the honour of capturing the very first wedding at the venue, but I also photographed the big day for the owners themselves! You can actually see Fran & Ben’s incredible Low Hall wedding to get a feel for how they’ve poured their own souls into this place. Having been part of the Low Hall family from day one and a recommended supplier, I have documented over 50 weddings and elopements here. From my professional viewpoint, this wonderful Lake District wedding venue is a simple decision. Not only do you have the freedom of controlling your own timeline (something many venues impact) you are absolutely spoilt for choice with backdrops for your wedding photographs or film. This venue guarantees stunning settings all year round, regardless of the season.

About Low Hall, The Lakes

One of my favourite Lake District Wedding Venues Low Hall, The Lakes has been around since 2019 and has become immensely popular. The venue is situated in 2 acres of stunning British countryside with lovely gardens and woodland, plus a small babbling stream.. There are two primary locations in relation to this venue. The first is the Low Hall farmhouse itself, and the second is the Lovable Old Barn. The combination of these two locations and the grounds makes it the picture-perfect venue for lots of couples. So if you are looking for either a barn wedding or a rustic-feeling wedding venue in the Lake District this could be the perfect choice.

Venue location

Nestled in beautiful, tranquil countryside near the village of Lorton, Low Hall, The Lakes can be found down a secluded country lane. It is about 2 miles outside the small rural town of Cockermouth on the edge of The Lake District in Cumbria. The venue itself is not far off the A66 with several train stations less than 5 miles away, meaning your guests have plenty of transport options. It is near the northern lakes of Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater and Ennerdale

Venue Style

The historic Lovable Old Barn and 17th-century Low Hall farmhouse has a really rustic and relaxed feel. This makes it perfect for those couples looking for a chilled wedding venue they can make their own. The Lakeland stone barn has two levels and is a blank canvas allowing couples to really stamp their mark on the place and make it what they want. Alternatively, the grounds allow for a wonderful outdoor celebration on a warm summer’s day.

Venue Capacity

This is flexible wedding venue for guest capacity, that adapts to always feel perfect whatever the size of the party. Perfect for small celebrations, should you be considering a Lake District elopement or small and intimate wedding, but big enough to accommodate weddings of up to 150 and not feel cramped. Fran and Ben, the owners, will really help you get the most out of your day whatever you choose.

Venue Accommodation

Low Hall has on-site accommodation providing six ensuite bedrooms within the beautiful farmhouse. Guests can find accommodation options ranging from camping to cottages, B&Bs, and a Premier Inn near the town of Cockermouth.

Why Choose Low Hall, The Lakes

Reason 1

The owners – Fran & Ben

Undoubtedly, my first reason for choosing Low Hall would be because of the owners Fran and Ben. I’m not even being slightly biased when I say this because I shot their wedding. This couple and the team at Low Hall will do everything they can to make your wedding day the most special day of your life. They are always on hand to help you with everything, from getting the most out of the venue itself to assisting you with local suppliers and trusted vendors.

Reason 2

Exclusive Use Wedding Venue

Low Hall is an exclusive use venue. Access comes as standard for 2 nights when booking your wedding, though you could of course request the venue for longer – I mean, who wouldn’t want to? The booking includes the use of everything on the site, including the 6 ensuite rooms in the farmhouse, the grounds and, of course, the Lovable Old Barn.

Reason 3

No Two Weddings Are The Same

Whilst Low Hall has a certain rustic aesthetic, it is a blank canvas allowing you to make your wedding day unique to you as a couple. Want a certain colour scheme? You’re not tied to the existing decor, as the barn is a bare canvas. Want a mixture of an outdoor wedding, a barn wedding, with a woodland wedding? You can. The only limit with this venue really is your imagination, and this flexibility means you can really create the wedding day you want. Having shot well over 50 weddings and elopements there now, I can confidently say no two have ever felt the same.

Reason 4

Mid-week intimate weddings & elopements

Low Hall offers a great mid-week package geared toward couples who are looking for a smaller, more intimate wedding or elopement. In fact, these have been some of my favourite weddings to be part of at the venue.

Key Venue Locations

Low Hall has a wealth of unique options to choose from for both your actual wedding ceremony and your reception or celebrations. The advantage of the venue, as mentioned earlier, is the flexibility to make your day exactly what you want, and as you get exclusive use of the site, you can plan your day as you see fit. Below, I’ll cover some of the key locations at this wedding venue.

1

The Farm House

Low Hall Farmhouse is the boutique B&B element of this site. The farmhouse is the focal point for much of the morning on a wedding day. It is where you are likely to get ready before your ceremony or celebration with close family and friends. Furnished to a high standard, it has a comfortable home away from home feel to it with its open fires, low beamed ceilings and bare stone walls. It has a really cosy feel to it in the colder months.

For smaller, intimate weddings and elopements you also have the option to choose to have your ceremony in either the library or the sung

The Lovable Old Barn

The Lovable Old Barn at Low Hall is a delightful, flexible space capable of being used for both ceremonies, receptions and much more. Split over two floors, this Lakeland stone barn has a wonderfully romantic feel to it, with its mood lighting, wooden beams and rustic stone walls. It is a great location for a ceremony or dinner reception, but also makes for a great dance floor. The location is a blank canvas that allows for couples to really make of it what they want.

3

The Gardens & Grounds

So one of the biggest appeals to many couples considering Low Hall are the wonderful gardens and grounds. Many couples opt to have their wedding ceremony outside (weather permitting) with the Loveable Old Barn as a backup. You can get a real festival or carnival vibe for your day. The outdoors offers flexibility with a choice of a scenic countryside or a magical woodland grove (a personal favourite of mine). Even if you opt for an indoor ceremony/reception, the outdoor space will almost certainly be popular with your guests, regardless.

Planning Your Low Hall Wedding

General Planning FAQs

Make contact with Fran & Ben at Low Hall, who will absolutely encourage you to visit and get to know them. They’ll be able to talk you through the booking process.

Low Hall is a really popular Lake District Wedding Venue. As with myself, you need to make contact as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment. If they are booked though, please do contact me and I might be able to suggest some alternatives.

Unlike many venues Low Hall, The Lakes comes with all the essentials you could need for your wedding including:

  • an amazing dedicated team of staff
  • on-site accommodation & breakfast (farmhouse)
  • choice of 6 potential ceremony locations (farmhouse x2, barn x2, outside x2)
  • 2 x bars (barn)
  • toilets (barn)
  • a dedicated sound system & microphones (barn)
  • ample electric points (barn)
  • tables, chairs & glassware
  • fire pit, fairy lights inside, festoon lights outside
  • a dedicated catering preparation area (barn)

Absolutely. There is plenty of parking at Low Hall for anyone driving, your vendors and then some.

There are disabled facilities, however, there is no lift access in the house or Barn. This should be taken into consideration if you have elderly or disabled guests.

Yes to both is the simple answer. Low Hall is a child and dog-friendly venue. My advice though is that a wedding day is hectic at the best of times. Managing children/dogs, with everything else is just additional stress, and actually, I’ve found can really impact your wedding day.

The solution is to make sure you nominate someone to look after the children/dog(s) on the day. If you want your family & friends to enjoy themselves I’d suggest investing in a wedding day nanny service/dog walker.

Photo & Film FAQs

In relation to Low Hall and wedding photography or films I would say there is so much outdoor space, try to make the most of it and get your guests outside (weather permitting). Sometimes couples make the mistake of not utilising this space effectively during their wedding, and it really is a shame.

Fran, Ben & the team at Low Hall really do know how to maximise their venue, so ask them for their suggestions.

If you haven’t checked out my general wedding planning guides for hints, tips & things to consider do check these out.

My personal favourite season to shoot at Low Hall is probably late summer / early autumn. The trees are awesome, full of rich reds, yellows and golds.

That being said, you really can’t go wrong whichever season you pick, the venue has something to offer. Be it the warm real fires crackling in winter or the way the light falls on the fields in summer.

Whilst all the rooms are a really high standard; for me, there really is only one room to have any prep photographs taken in and that is the “Mega Views Mega Bath King Suite“. This is by far the best room for light for your preparation shots, so try and keep it for yourself

Crummock is probably the Lake you are thinking of. It really is an epic location for portraits, but it is a 40-minute roundtrip from Low Hall, so is not always practical on your wedding day.

If your timeline doesn’t allow for this and you really want it, then I’d suggest booking a post-wedding shoot so as to reduce any pressure on your timeline on the day.
