WHY ELOPE?

WONDERING IF AN ELOPEMENT OR SMALL WEDDING IS FOR YOU?

It’s your chance to do something different

A NON-TRADITIONAL WEDDING DAY FOCUSED ON YOU

If you are considering an elopement or more intimate wedding you are probably thinking about doing things a little differently.  You’re probably wanting your wedding day more focused on you as a couple, your relationship and those people and moments that are important to you both. You’re much less focused on the expectations of others and probably don’t want the stress of planning a big traditional wedding. Instead, you’re wanting a much more relaxed and chilled feel to your wedding day. One that you also get to enjoy and I’m here to reassure you that you are not alone.

INCREASINGLY POPULAR

More and more couples are opting to get married in this way, and it is growing in popularity.  As a wedding photographer and videographer, I’m here to say GO FOR IT!  Your wedding day really should be about making your day your own doing what you want and not what is expected! Whether it is an adventurous hike in the Lake District with just the two of you on the top of a mountain or a small wedding with immediate family and friends in a small Air BnB in a city location we’re here to document it and help you capture the moments.

CLARY + BRUCE

“We wanted the best of both worlds so we booked Jono for both our elopement at Gilpin House in The Lakes and our bigger more traditional wedding later in the year at our family farm. Jono was amazing and captured both our celebrations wonderfully. We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer and he was on hand with us every step of the way.”

SOME DEFINITIONS

ELOPEMENT, MICRO WEDDING OR SMALL & INTIMATE WEDDING?

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

I know it can be confusing given how many different terms there are out there to describe smaller weddings, and whilst there aren’t any formal globally agreed definitions I wanted to give you my thoughts and definitions and how they each differ slightly.

WHAT IS AN ELOPEMENT?

The couple and up to 6 guests

An elopement wedding was traditionally referred to as a marriage that was conducted all of a sudden and secretly. It usually was done without telling friends or family such as those that took place at Gretna Green just over the border from Cumbria. More recently eloping refers to a couple that is looking to get married with just the two of them or a very small gathering of select people (less than 6) in an intimate setting. It means they can take place in locations that just aren’t practical for larger groups.

WHAT IS A MICRO WEDDING?

The couple and up to 15 guests

The Micro Wedding is a relatively new term that has gained prominence since the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst initially a legal requirement it’s geared towards couples who want to do things differently, but still, get to celebrate with their very closest friends and family. Frequently couples choosing this type of wedding opt to have an intimate celebration with personal vows in a special location with their immediate loved ones and then return to a small private venue or Air BnB for a small celebration or meal.

SMALL & INTIMATE WEDDINGS

The couple and up to 50 guests

Small and Intimate Weddings are closer in nature to a traditional wedding but have a much smaller number of guests giving the day a much more intimate feel. Couples may again opt to have an intimate celebration with personal vows just the two of them in a special location and then a celebration with their family and friends. Alternatively, they may choose to have a more traditional wedding just with a smaller number of guests. These weddings generally require the booking of a small intimate wedding venue

NATURAL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY CAPTURING THE IMPORTANT MOMENTS FOR YOU AS A COUPLE

MORE THAN YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

As a Lake District Wedding Photographer and Videographer, I have photographed literally 100’s of weddings, engagements and elopements in this wonderful part of the world. When choosing me as your Lake District Elopement Photographer you are getting more than a photographer that is going to rock up on your day and feel like a stranger with a camera. I’m here to work with you in partnership from the very get-go and you can rest assured that I can guide you through the entire process of planning your perfect wedding. I’ll be on hand to provide ideas, inspiration or local knowledge. From helping you choose the perfect location to stay to recommending a local vendor that will be able to help you fulfil your vision.

NATURAL & DOCUMENTARY NOT POSED

Posed wedding photography has its place (even if I dislike it). However, I have always prefered to prompt rather than pose my couples (and even then only if required). What do I mean by prompting not posing? Basically giving you a prompt such as “hold each other’s hands” and then capturing your natural comfort and rhythm in following that prompt. We all have our own ‘style’ for showing our love for our partners and my job is to capture this in its most natural form with minimal input from me. I have found that by their nature elopements, micro weddings and to some extent intimate weddings tend to be more relaxed and as such couples tend to forget about the camera, allowing me to capture moments as they happen in a much more relaxed natural and documentary style.

CINEMATIC, EMOTIONAL ELOPEMENT FILMS WITH A TOUCH EDITORIAL FLARE

TIMELESS EDITORIAL STORYTELLING

As Lake District Elopement videographers, we love combining our passion for one of the most beautiful areas of the world with anything film-related. We take inspiration from all over and love utilising natural light and shadows to create cinematic films full of emotion. The results are classic, timeless and editorial elopement films that tell the story of your intimate wedding in the Lake District.

MINIMAL GEAR, MAXIMUM RESULTS

Unlike a lot of videographers, as elopement filmmakers, we have to use minimal equipment for maximum results. Utilising the latest cinematic video cameras our wedding films capture your love story without being gear intensive. A camera (and backup), tripod, microphones and the odd light. After all, we can’t be hiking up a mountain with a full studio setup. Check out the films below to see what we mean.

FAQ’S

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

An elopement is a small and intimate wedding celebration usually involving just a couple or the couple and a very select number of guests in an intimate setting that would not be possible with a larger guest list.

There really are a series of pros and cons to eloping with your partner, however, my clients who have opted to elope have cited reasons from budget savings to it being more romantic. Every client I work with who has opted to elope has their own specific reason for getting married and photographing or filming their marriage in this way.

This is a really difficult question many couples who are considering an elopement struggle with.  There are pros and cons to both an elopement or a traditional wedding.  Ultimately it is about what you want from your wedding day.  If you are wanting a small intimate romantic affair with a more relaxed feel to your wedding day, then an elopement might be the answer. Ultimately, there is nothing to stop you from doing both. Clary + Bruce did exactly this opting for an intimate elopement for their wedding ceremony and then having a more traditional wedding celebration later.

Well, I am not a wedding planner, but contacting me would be a great first step. I can help you with much of the initial planning that is needed when considering an elopement. From vendor recommendations to suggesting locations for your vows through to helping you get the most from your day with a well thought out timeline.

Ultimately if I can help you I will, but a wedding planner can be a great investment when considering this sort of wedding to assist with the more practical and hands-on tasks and I’d be happy to recommend some.

We find a lot of clients are unsure initially where to elope in the UK.  Most of our clients that are looking for UK elopement packages generally consider the more picturesque places such as the Lake District, Snowdonia, Ireland or parts of Scotland. Gretna Green is especially popular as a traditional location for elopements.  If you’d prefer a beach or city location, however, go for it.

In Europe, popular elopement destinations include the Dolomites in Italy the Austrian Alps to the glaciers of Iceland.  These tend to be especially popular for adventure elopements.  As a destination wedding photographer, Paris and Rome can be especially romantic European locations, but ultimately any location in the world can be suited to an elopement.

There is no right or wrong way to elope. Some of my couples opt to share their plans with their loved ones and spend time planning their elopement down to the last detail. Others prefer to keep their elopement secret, telling only their vendors, and then breaking the news to their family when they return. We are happy to provide any advice you may require when planning your elopement.

I only offer full-day coverage and there is a very specific reason for that. I consider myself a visual storyteller and I want to tell the story of your whole wedding day and not just the elopement ceremony and a few couple’s portraits. I want you to enjoy the full day’s worth of memories. From you getting ready in the morning to your personal vows right through until the end of the day when you enjoy a romantic sunset together.

No, you’ll be happy to know your elopement can be exactly what you want it to be. There is no right or wrong way to elope so don’t worry if hiking isn’t your thing. If you’re wanting more natural backdrops there are places you can get to with very little effort that have a secluded and intimate feel. Ultimately an elopement is all about you as a couple vowing to share your life together and other than that what you choose to do to mark that occasion is really up to you.
